The criticism Chelsea have repeatedly received has been aimed at BlueCo's recruitment strategy which as seen them gamble on potential and not make enough effort to sign players already proven in the Premier League, but that approach looks certain to change this summer.
With Xabi Alonso preparing to take charge on July 1, the Blues are being linked with players who already understand the demands of English football and can contribute immediately rather than needing time to develop.
Chelsea plotting ambitious move for Adam Wharton
According to journalist Dean Jones (via the Standard), Chelsea have been extensively scouting Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton and view him as a serious option.
Enzo Fernandez is currently the side's most highest profile midfielder but his future looks increasingly likely to be at Real Madrid. Despite this, Wharton is not viewed as the Argentine's direct replacement, suggesting another midfielder could join alongside the Englishman.
There remain huge fitness concerns surrounding Romeo Lavia following another injury-disrupted campaign, while Andrey Santos is still relatively inexperienced despite his potential.
As a result, Chelsea are keen to provide the incoming Alonso with more players who have already proven themselves in the Premier League, and Wharton definitely fits into that category following a meteoric rise since making his debut for the Eagles just over two years ago.
The 22-year-old has the ability to dictate the tempo of matches, progress the ball through midfield and pick out a pass when needed. Although he was unlucky to miss out on the Three Lions' 2026 World Cup, there is no doubting he's been one of England's most impressive central midfielders.
Because of this, as well as the fact Wharton still has three year left on his contract, the challenge for Chelsea, of course, is convincing Crystal Palace to sell him.
Crystal Palace hoping to fend off interest with bumper new contract
Palace aren't stupid either. They're fully aware of the growing interest in their star man and, according to Sky Sports News, hope to fend off that interest by offering him a bumper new deal.
Fresh from winning the UEFA Conference League and securing European football again next season, the Eagles believe they are in a strong position to convince Wharton to stick around at Selhurst Park.
Although it is not known how Wharton feels about extending his stay at Palace, Chelsea may feel they're still an attractive enough option, regardless of their European exile next season, to convince the midfielder to make the switch.
Manchester United are also long-time admirers of Palace's number 20 but with Atalanta's Ederson close to signing and Newcastle's Sandro Tonali believed to be Michael Carrick's priority, the Red Devils may be forced to cool their interest.
