There is no doubt that Jose Mourinho is the most successful manager in Chelsea history and for a long time, he was arguably the best coach in all of Europe. Unfortunately, it looks like the Portuguese manager has faded away from top-level European football over the last several years. His last league triumph came at Stamford Bridge in his second spell at the club.

That's a decade without a league title for a man who used to win them for fun at one point. And he now looks set to make a return to where it all started for him.

Many might not know but it is at Benfica that Mourinho got his first job. But he managed them for only eleven games before resigning after not being handed a contract extension. He now looks set to return to take care of unfinished business at Estadio de Luz.

As reported by CNN Portugal, Benfica has reached an agreement in principle with Mourinho to take over as head coach. The details of the contract are now being finalised.

Incidentally, it was on the back of a defeat to Benfica that Mourinho was sacked as the manager of Fenerbahce. Now, he is set to join them after Bruno Lage was shown the exit door by the Portuguese club after losing at home to Qarabag in the Champions League.

This might exactly be the move that Mourinho needs at this point in his career. His days of managing the absolute top teams in Europe seem to be behind him. But then, you never know. We had thought the same thing about Carlo Ancelotti as well when he was at Everton but then he made a return to Real Madrid and won a couple more Champions League titles.

Chelsea fans will always wish Mourinho nothing but the best. Hopefully, we see The Special One at his best back in his homeland.
