There are many Chelsea fans who believe that the club did not do enough in the summer transfer window. And they will point towards the results on the pitch as proof. Of course, one cannot overlook the impact that the injuries have had on Enzo Maresca's team. At the same time, it is undeniable that the summer signings have not really made a bright start to life at Stamford Bridge.
Joao Pedro looked brilliant early on. But lately, he has had trouble carrying the goalscoring burden of the team on his shoulders. He is not an out-and-out striker and works best alongside a focal point, which Liam Delap could have been. The Brazilian has also dealt with some fitness issues but has had to play through them due to Chelsea's lack of options up front at the moment.
On the left flank, the club made two additions. Jamie Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho were brought in. But neither has really convinced, and as a result, Pedro Neto has often been deployed there.
That is far from ideal. Interestingly, it looks like another left winger is on Chelsea's radar. What would that mean for the futures of Gittens and Garnacho though?
Chelsea and Liverpool interested in Belgian international next year
It is a player the Blues were linked with this summer as well. As reported by Mark Brus (via Football Talk), Chelsea and Liverpool are both interested in signing Malick Fofana next year.
Many would say though that it is time that Chelsea reassess their transfer strategy and start going for some proven names. But it looks like the new ownership is intent on trying to reinvent the wheel.
The result of it is that the focus is always on the future, instead of trying to win in the present. That cannot be a continuous cycle though. At some point, one has to say that Chelsea must win now. When will that point come?
