Chelsea always needed to sign a striker this summer with Nicolas Jackson struggling to meet expectations. It has been suggested that the club are now on the verge of agreeing a deal to sign Liam Delap from Ipswich Town, by meeting his £30 million release clause. It is possible that he might not be their only centre-forward signing either.
Viktor Gyokeres is likely to be the most in-demand striker in this summer transfer window. He is believed to be on the radar of pretty much every top club in Europe.
It had looked like Chelsea were not going to be on that list, as they are set to sign Delap, who has a similar profile to Gyokeres. But if reports in Portugal are accurate, then the Blues seem to have joined the race for the prolific Sporting Lisbon striker as well.
As reported by Record (via The Sun), Chelsea have entered the race to sign Gyokeres. The Conference League winners are said to have submitted a formal enquiry about signing the Swedish striker from Sporting CP.
Chelsea make move to sign Viktor Gyokeres out of nowhere
Gyokeres has scored 54 goals in 52 games this season. It is not hard to understand why every team in world football might want to sign him. He is an out-and-out goalscorer playing at the peak of his powers and is believed to be available for a relatively mid-range transfer fee.
It is not the type of profile Chelsea are known to go after though, since their change in ownership. So, there will be some doubts about how genuine the Blues' interest is in signing Gyokeres.
That being said, if you ask most fans, they would probably want the club to go out and sign a proven goalscorer like Gyokeres or Victor Osimhen. That will only accelerate this Chelsea project, which is finally starting to show signs of life.
