This has been a brilliant week for Chelsea. First, they met their primary objective for the season, which was securing Champions League qualification, thanks to an away win against Nottingham Forest, who were also in the running for a top 5 finish. Then, things got even better for the Blues as they defeated Real Betis to win the UEFA Conference League, ending their trophy drought in the process. Hopefully, this is just the start of great things to come.
There is more good news for Chelsea fans. Signing a new striker is believed to be atop the club's wishlist this summer and it looks like they have already gotten their man.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are closing in on the deal to sign Liam Delap as details of the long-term contract are being completed with his agents. Enzo Maresca appreciation, plus Champions League football, made the difference as the Blues are set to activate the £30m release clause.
Delap was also on the radar of clubs like Manchester United, Newcastle United and Everton. But it looks like Chelsea have won the race for his signature.
Fabrizio Romano drops blockbuster Chelsea transfer update
Delap impressed with his performances this season, even though he was not able to save Ipswich Town from being relegated. He ended the campaign with 12 Premier League goals.
Delap is known for his strength as well as the ability to make something out of nothing. In many ways, he is similar to Viktor Gyokeres, who is expected to be the most in-demand striker in the world football this summer.
Of course, performing for Ipswich Town is not the same as Chelsea. Now, Delap will have to deal with different defensive setups and a lot of low blocks. Will he be as effective against them? It looks like we are set to find out soon.
