This summer transfer window has been a major one for both Chelsea and Manchester United. We saw a glimpse of what the Blues have added to their squad in the form of Joao Pedro, who scored once and assisted twice in their win against West Ham United. Estevao was a standout performer as well. Liam Delap might not have scored but he did provide that target up top, who helped the others around. Jamie Gittens and Jorrel Hato came off the bench in the second half.
As for Manchester United, they lost their opening game. But there were many who seemed to be impressed by their performance, especially that of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
It appears that earlier in the summer, both had tried to sign a Spanish midfielder as well. But unfortunately, a move did not materialise for either.
As reported by SPORT, Barcelona received two offers at the end of July to transfer Fermin Lopez for a sum close to €80 million. Specifically, it was Manchester United and Chelsea who officially approached the Blaugrana club to begin negotiations. There were many voices within Barca willing to formalise a deal, but Hansi Flick vetoed his departure.
Chelsea and Man Utd made €80m offer for Spanish international
Barcelona have been producing some world-class talents out of La Masia over the years. It looks like Fermin is someone who has the potential to reach that level.
Of course, one has to question where he would have played in this Chelsea setup. Perhaps the Blues wanted him a role that they are now trying to bring in Xavi Simons to play.
It did not end up materialising though and clearly, Chelsea have turned their attention elsewhere. The move for Simons is believed to be dependent on exits, with Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson top candidates to depart before this summer transfer window closes on September 1.
