Chelsea could have found the solution to their problem position, with the club reportedly being offered the chance to sign Emi Martínez.
David Ornstein has revealed that the Argentine No. 1 has been offered to Chelsea for just over £10 million, with the Blues reportedly considering their options following Robert Sánchez’s performance against Fulham.
Martínez is likely to be open to a move, having made it clear ahead of the FIFA World Cup that he intended to leave Aston Villa. A move to Juventus was reportedly close but ultimately fell through over wage demands.
With Zion Suzuki now established as Villa’s first-choice goalkeeper this season, Martínez’s departure could make sense for all parties involved, while the Blues could secure an experienced goalkeeper for a relatively modest fee.
A signing like this would likely come with significant wages, but if Chelsea want greater experience and, arguably more quality, between the sticks, a deal could be resolved relatively quickly. At just over £10 million, the fee would also be reasonable for a goalkeeper who could potentially make the difference between a top-six finish and a top-three finish, particularly if Chelsea are serious about challenging for the Premier League title this season.
Martinez's other options
In David Ornstein’s revelation, it has also emerged that Emi Martínez has been offered to Tottenham Hotspur, with the goalkeeper potentially given the chance to replace Antonín Kinský. Faith in the Czech goalkeeper is reportedly diminishing, which could see Spurs explore the market for a more experienced option between the sticks.
If the reports are to be believed, Martínez was keen on a move to Juventus and the opportunity to experience a new league and different surroundings. While that could provide him with the perfect reason to leave Aston Villa, a move to Chelsea would not necessarily offer the same change of scenery.
There have also been reports of interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, an option Martínez could consider, while a reunion with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami could also be a viable destination for the goalkeeper.
Time will tell whether Chelsea add another goalkeeper to their options, but Martínez would certainly represent a player the Blues could rely on if they decide to make a move.
