Do Chelsea need another centre-back? If you asked most fans, they'd say yes. That is despite the fact that the club already have a long list of central defenders on their books. But unfortunately, there is no settled duo in the heart of defence. Levi Colwill is the only one who can be considered a nailed-on starter right now.
Trevoh Chalobah has done well, but is he a long-term fixture in the starting XI? That does not feel like the case. In fact, rumours suggest he is a potential candidate to depart this summer. The likes of Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoit Badiashile feel like depth options. Wesley Fofana is great but extremely injury-prone, with him playing just 34 matches in his three years as a Chelsea player. Axel Disasi is expected to depart this summer.
So, that's where we stand in terms of Chelsea's centre-backs. It is not out of the question for them to go out and make a marquee addition there in this summer transfer window.
Marc Guehi has been linked and a lot of fans would like to see the England international return to Chelsea this summer. But it looks like they have their eyes set on an Italian defender instead.
Chelsea preparing offer for €60m Italian centre-back
As reported by Tuttomercatoweb, Chelsea want Giorgio Scalvini. The English club are monitoring the situation of the Italian defender from Atalanta and are preparing an initial offer to be submitted shortly.
It remains to be seen what kind of offer Chelsea make, if they do indeed make one. It is believed that Atalanta would want a fee in the region of €60 million to part ways with the Italian international.
There is no question about Scalvini's talent or potential. Of course, most would wonder whether he would be able to make the transition from the Serie A to the Premier League. Chelsea do have a rich history of success when it comes to Italian players though. Could he be the next in line? We shall find out soon.
