Levi Colwill's ACL injury in pre-season training handed Chelsea a major problem. From his comments, it was pretty clear that Enzo Maresca wanted another centre-back to be brought in as the Englishman's replacement. But the club decided that they had enough options in defence and did not make a signing there.
Chelsea were once again handed a similar problem on the opposite end of the pitch when Liam Delap went down with a hamstring injury in their recent game against Fulham. The initial belief was that he would be out for six to eight weeks but there are fears that his absence could end up being longer than that.
On top of that, Chelsea also agreed a loan with an obligation to buy deal with Bayern Munich for Nicolas Jackson. That left them with Joao Pedro as the only out-and-out striker.
Marc Guiu was recalled from his loan spell at Sunderland to add some cover for Pedro. And now, another striker is set to be brought back.
Chelsea ready to recall another striker after Marc Guiu
As reported by Diario do Peixe (via Sports Mole), Chelsea have taken the decision to recall Deivid Washingston. They will bring him back to England before making a decision on his future.
Washington's development has not gone as expected, that is pretty clear. After struggling for game time at Chelsea, he was sent out on loan to Santos, his boyhood club, to help him find his feet in senior football.
But Washington's struggles have continued back home as well. He has managed to score just once in 19 appearances for Santos while on loan there. And now, it looks like Chelsea have decided that it is time for change.
Of course, with the lack of strikers at Stamford Bridge right now, Chelsea could decide to hand him the third striker role until Delap is back from injury. Let's see.
