Enzo Fernandez is someone who has been on the receiving end of a ton of criticism lately, although he remains one of Chelsea's biggest contributors in terms of goals and assists. The complaints are centred around his overall game, rather than his output. In his new role since the arrival of Enzo Maresca, the Argentine is no longer the one who dictates the game. Also, his defensive attributes are not up to the mark either, as he is not the most mobile presence in the middle of the park.

As a result, despite being the only player in history to win both the World Cup and the Club World Cup, Fernandez is someone who could be headed for the Chelsea exit door soon. Could Real Madrid be his next destination?

Real Madrid have been linked with a move for Fernandez, going back to his time at Benfica. And in recent weeks, those rumours have only grown, suggesting that Los Blancos could be considering a move for the Chelsea midfielder.

As reported by Defensa Central, Chelsea are reportedly willing to sign Fede Valverde, allowing Fernandez to leave for Real Madrid. Therefore, in London, they aren't ruling out a swap at the end of the season if all parties are happy.

Let's see what the future holds for Fernandez. If the Blues continue to struggle and end up having an unsuccessful season, then they might opt to make some major changes to their squad next summer, after four seasons of no real success.

In that instance, Fernandez could be one of the names to depart. The issue is, the role that he is best at, does not seem to exist in Maresca's system.

On the other hand, Chelsea have also been linked with quite a few midfielders in recent times. So, one has to wonder if the club are already thinking about life beyond Fernandez.

For now, the focus has to be on this season though, as they look to bring things back on track after their early struggles. The win over Benfica was a step in the right direction.
