Chelsea told eye-watering Morgan Rogers price as Arsenal set to kick-start bidding war

Chelsea are probably relieved this season is finally over after another hugely disappointing campaign ended without European football.

Missing out on continental qualification altogether represents a massive setback both financially and competitively, particularly given the huge amount of money invested into the squad since BlueCo took control of the club in 2022.

Nevertheless, with the 2025-26 campaign now over with, there is growing excitement surrounding the arrival of Xabi Alonso on July 1.

The Spaniard’s appointment is a major shift in direction from Chelsea’s ownership, especially following recent reports suggesting Alonso will hold greater influence behind the scenes than previous managers under BlueCo.

That influence could soon become important in the transfer market as Chelsea prepare for another huge summer rebuild. And one of the Premier League’s most in-demand attacking players is already attracting serious interest.

Arsenal set to kick-start Morgan Rogers bidding war

According to talkSPORT, Arsenal are preparing to make the opening move in the race to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa this summer.

Chelsea also hold an interest in Rogers alongside Manchester United and Champions League holders PSG. Being in such high demand shouldn't come as a surprise given how impressive the 23-year-old has been for the Villains.

The England international has quickly become one of the Premier League’s most dangerous and versatile attackers, capable of playing at number 10, from wide positions or in deeper roles.

After winning the Premier League title, Mikel Arteta’s side are clearly looking to strengthen again this summer rather than standing still, and Rogers would fit naturally into the fluid attacking system Arsenal have developed over recent years.

Chelsea remain equally as interested, though, and it's interesting, because while Rogers would undoubtedly improve the squad, his arrival would also raise serious questions surrounding the futures of several current stars, including Cole Palmer.

Eye-watering sale expected

The biggest obstacle for the Blues and the other interested clubs may ultimately be Aston Villa’s asking price.

According to this latest report, Villa are not expected to entertain offers below £80 million for Rogers, with the player’s eventual sale price potentially reaching an eye-watering £100 million.

That's a huge figure for any club, but even more so for Chelsea, who are already needing to balance PSR concerns following years of heavy spending under BlueCo.

It also explains why Arsenal appear keen to move quickly before a full-scale bidding war develops involving multiple elite clubs.

As for Chelsea, their lack of European football will also hurt their chances, especially after Rogers has just had a taste of success following Villa's Europa League win — a final he scored in.

Top players understandably want Champions League football, particularly when top sides are competing simultaneously for their signature. Of course, that alone doesn't mean Alonso can't attract the best players, but it certainly puts him at a disadvantage compared to rival clubs.
