Chelsea were desperate to return to winning ways, but their performance was desperately poor, with the Blues never looking like taking control of the game.
The match was fairly even at half-time, with the score 0-0 and Chelsea creating the better chances during the opening 45 minutes. However, the second half was abysmal from both a chance-creation and defensive perspective, with the Blues offering very little going forward while repeatedly making costly mistakes at the back.
All three goals came from defensive errors, showing just how quickly a game can slip away. The late goals may have added some excitement and given the scoreline a different look, but Chelsea deserved to lose. No player managed to impose themselves on the game or grab it by the scruff of the neck when the team needed someone to step up.
Emi Martinez - 5.5
Made a few decent saves but ultimately could have done better for the first and second goals (little bit harsh). Kicking was wasteful.
Wesley Fofana - 5
Who was he marking for the corner when the smallest player was outjumped and outmuscled for the first contact at the corner. Was caught out of position multiple times.
Maxence Lacroix - 5
Was good in the first half but struggled and bullied against Igor Thiago in the second half.
Levi Colwill - 5
I don't think this system suits Colwill, as his overall quality has noticeably dropped compared to the level he showed when he was in contention two years ago.
Pedro Neto - 4.5
More than happy to sprint forward when Chelsea are attacking, but when it comes to tracking back during the transition, he barely breaks sweat. His final ball was also disappointing tonight, with too many opportunities going to waste.
Jordan Henderson - 6.5
Thought he was good overall, helping get the team ticking from midfield and delivering some dangerous crosses from deep and from corners. However, he ultimately lost possession in the build-up to Brentford's second goal.
Valentin Barco - 6
Passed well and shows good commitment. Harassment is his best quality and will need to improve performances to stay in the team.
Pep Chavarria - 6
The better of the two wing-backs, he got into some good attacking positions and worked hard to track back. However, he was caught out for Brentford’s third goal.
Cole Palmer - 6.5
Made a positive impact in the final third, including one excellent pass to Pedro Neto in the first half. It felt more like Brentford did a good job of nullifying him rather than him having a poor performance.
Failed to celebrate his international comeback.
Morgan Rogers - 6
Had a quiet second half and cannot remember much from him when he was moved up front. Will remember those half chances more now.
Danny Welbeck - 4.5
João Pedro will not be worried about losing his place after that performance. He was anonymous for large periods of the game, although he had a case for a free-kick after being tripped when played through on goal.
