Cole Palmer has made a name for himself ever since joining Chelsea from Manchester City back in 2023. Although the English international hasn’t had the best start to the new season, with a persistent groin injury keeping the number 10 on the sidelines lately, he remains one of the most important players for the Blues.
Palmer was all over the headlines not too long ago when he spearheaded Chelsea to a win over Champions League holders PSG in the Club World Cup final. The ever-so-cold number 10 scored two goals and provided an assist for the Blues, who won the matchup 3–0.
Palmer was recently asked to name his favourite players of all time. In response, Palmer told Sports Direct (via Sports Illustrated) a sequence of names that might come as a surprise to many. He said:
"“Messi, because he’s the GOAT.
“Neymar, [Wayne] Rooney, [Cristiano] Ronaldo.”"
Cole Palmer chooses his favourite players of all time
Although Messi being named the GOAT is the majority opinion, it might not sit well with Ronaldo fans, who view the Portuguese icon as the best ever. He is closing in on 1000 goals.
Also, one has to wonder if he named the remaining three players in order or not. If so, that would mean that Ronaldo is behind Neymar and Rooney as well.
Palmer was a Manchester United fan growing up, even though he was part of City's academy. So, Rooney’s influence isn’t all that surprising, to be honest. Neymar is a name that might surprise some but then again, even though he did not hit the heights of Messi and Ronaldo, the Brazilian was extremely influential for the way he played the game.
Anyway, shifting focus to Chelsea, the club return to action against Nottingham Forest on 18th October. However, Palmer is set to miss that matchup due to a groin issue. The 23-year-old is likely to return in the first week of November, as the club are unwilling to rush him back and risk further injury.
