One of the key reasons why Chelsea have struggled this season is the absence of Cole Palmer due to injury. The Englishman has been dealing with a recurring groin issue and has only been available for a handful of games. When he has played, he has been extremely effective. But unfortunately, we have not seen him in action for a while now.

The good news is, he is closing in on a return to the pitch. And now, it looks like the club and Palmer himself have one particular game in mind, and are working towards it as the target.

As reported by The Standard, the hope of both Palmer and Chelsea that he will have recovered in time to feature against Barcelona. It is the fixture that they are actively working towards.

Of course, that game is on November 25 against Barcelona at Stamford Bridge. Exactly a week away. We do not need to tell you how important it is. Firstly, because of the opposition. Secondly, because Chelsea need to pick up some points after a shaky start to their Champions League campaign. The draw against Qarabag has left them in a sticky position when it comes to their qualification hopes.

Of course, it will be important to ease Palmer back into action. Perhaps that is a mistake that Enzo Maresca made the first time around.

He returned in the game against Brentford, coming on as a substitute and finding the back of the net. A few days later, he played the entire match against Bayern Munich away at the Allianz Arena and scored again. And then, when he featured a third time in the space of a week, starting against Manchester United, he was forced off with another injury in the first half itself.

Chelsea cannot afford to make the same mistake. The game against Barcelona is important for sure. But the long-term fitness of Palmer is even more important. If there is any risk involved in featuring him on that day, the club should not push for it.
