Chelsea might have won against Wolves but the result raised more questions about this team than provided answers. It had started so well. The Blues went into the break 3-0 up and it looked like Enzo Maresca's side were moving in the right direction. It was probably their best half of football this season.
Then, they followed it up with possibly the worst. And that takes some doing, considering some of their results lately.
First, they allowed Wolves to get back into the game and make it 3-2. Then, as if things were not already shaky enough. Liam Delap was sent off needlessly to get the Blues down to ten men. And just when looked like Jamie Gittens had put the game to bed by scoring a fourth, they conceded again seconds later.
This is the kind of performance which shows the need to have experience in a team. You are not going to win with these players. That is just the reality of it. This team has no discipline, picking up constant red cards. And they cannot deal whenever there is some pressure on them. Wolves are the worst team in the Premier League right now and have not even won a game. This should have been a confidence-building match for Maresca's side. Instead, it was a narrow escape.
'Embarrassing' - Unhappy Chelsea fans react despite win vs Wolves
It is not hard to understand why Chelsea fans were unhappy in the aftermath of the game, despite winning. As one wrote: "These defenders are truly embarrassing. We need more experience. They are so fragile in defence it’s frightening."
The lack of discipline remains a major issue as well. Another fan said: "This lack of discipline has to be sorted out now. So many red cards for this Chelsea team, and this one was so pointless."
Last season, it had looked like Chelsea were moving in the right direction, having finished in the top four and won two trophies. This time around, they are right back to square one. A team with no identity and ability to compete at a high level.
Many will claim that it is down to the injuries to key players like Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill. And that is a fair point. But then, there are a lot of other underlying issues that need to be addressed.
Do you need Palmer and Colwill to see out a half of football, after going 3-0 up, against the worst team in the Premier League? Do you need them to make sure that you don't pick up a red card in pretty much every match?
