Chelsea have set a 5pm UK deadline on Friday, 14 August, for the Argentine midfielder’s transfer to be initiated with an acceptable offer. The Blues are determined to prevent the speculation from disrupting their preparations and want enough time to secure a replacement should Fernández leave.
The terms are clear and non-negotiable: City must bid around £120 million by late afternoon, or Fernández will remain in west London for Xabi Alonso’s upcoming campaign.
There were claims yesterday that City had tested Chelsea’s resolve with a £102 million proposal, but those reports were quickly dismissed. As things stand, Chelsea insist no acceptable offer has landed in their inbox, leaving Fernández no closer to a reunion with his former manager Enzo Maresca.
A tense wait for football fans, with the prospect of one of the most expensive transfers ever between two British clubs potentially becoming a reality.
Chelsea perspective
Most of the Chelsea fanbase would likely be delighted to see Fernández depart for such a hefty fee, potentially bringing in £20–30 million more than his current market valuation. Some fans might even offer to drive him to Manchester. His inconsistent World Cup performances, outstanding against England but underwhelming in the final, have only added to the debate surrounding his value.
For many English Chelsea supporters, their affection for Fernández turned sour after the semi-final, while his performances last season did little to set Stamford Bridge alight. His subsequent comments about wanting to live in Madrid attempting a pull from Real Madrid, also landed badly with supporters and were interpreted by some as an indication that he was keen to move on.
A seemingly win-win situation for the club given the depth of their squad, but the real question is whether Chelsea can replace Fernández’s quality.
You could argue that Fernández does not necessarily need to be replaced, given the sheer depth Chelsea already possess in midfield. In deeper roles, the Blues have Moisés Caicedo, Jordan Henderson, Romeo Lavia and Dário Essugo, while further forward there is Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Estêvão and Valentín Barco.
With the current midfield market, the club may use the Fernández windfall to recruit a younger English replacement, such as Alex Scott or Adam Wharton. Such a move would fit neatly with the club’s transfer model of targeting young, high-potential players, while also adding Premier League experience and proven quality to the squad.
