Reece James was one of Chelsea's standout performers yesterday, as they drew with Arsenal despite being down to 10 men. James kept the middle of the park composed despite losing his midfield partner, Moises Caicedo, to a sending off.
James led by example, and the Chelsea captain set up Trevoh Chalobah's goal with a perfect set-piece delivery. They would have been disappointed to surrender their lead, but a point is great considering the circumstances.
Unfortunately, James has had his fair share of injuries throughout his career. There is always a fear that the player could have more fitness issues. Enzo Maresca is taking no chances with his captain.
Fabrizio Romano quoted the Chelsea manager after the draw, saying, "James delivered a fantastic performance. Another 90 mins against Leeds? NO. It is a no, the reality is no. It was a great performance, but we need to manage Reece."
It is worrying that Maresca will not take a chance on James against Leeds, despite the fact that Caicedo will be suspended. Leeds United may currently be in the relegation places, but their clashes with Chelsea can be fierce. Therefore, Daniel Farke's side could step up in this fixture.
Who could Chelsea play with Reece James to be rested?
Cole Palmer made the bench against Arsenal, but did not get on. He could resume the attacking midfield role if Enzo Fernández drops to a deeper role. Andrey Santos will also likely be brought into the lineup.
The Blues will still miss James as he is as good in midfield as he is at right-back. However, Chelsea has a big squad, so they do have cover. Malo Gusto is also an excellent full-back who has filled in superbly when James has been used in midfield.
Chelsea's earning of a point against the Gunners closed the gap between the two in the Premier League to just six points. The Blues are still considered dark horses for the title. However, with the money they have spent, the Club World Cup champions should definitely be considered as challengers.
Arsenal's draw with Chelsea proved that they do not always show up in the big games. They lost to Liverpool and could only draw with Manchester City earlier this season. Therefore, there will be lots of twists and turns at the top of the Premier League this season. Providing that all their top players stay fit, there is no reason that Maresca cannot lead his side to the title.
