There should be some hesitation in engaging with Jamie Carragher's outlandish takes on Chelsea, given that doing so plays directly into an engagement game.
In what has become the sad state of modern football punditry, insightful and well-rooted analysis — which Carragher is capable of — has been replaced by “hot takes” designed purely to rile up fans and rack up views.
In that sense, Carragher has been successful. The problem is that some of those takes have only looked more absurd with the passing of time. There is no better example than the claim he made shortly after Chelsea lifted the Club World Cup in July.
Jamie Carragher's bizarre Chelsea jab leaves him with egg on his face
Speaking on The Overlap fan debate show, he proclaimed: “It’s not a proper competition. How can you be Champions of the World if the champions of England, Spain and Italy weren’t even in it?” Carragher went one step further (or perhaps down) by calling it a “Mickey Mouse” trophy while on CBS.
It was always hard to imagine Carragher saying the same if Liverpool had won the Club World Cup in the manner Chelsea did. If you cannot imagine a pundit making the same argument when discussing their own club, you usually know it’s pretty baseless.
The logic behind Liverpool, Barcelona and Napoli not being in the CWC was simple: they did not meet the qualifying criteria over the selected period.
But beyond that, it was a way for Carragher to avoid praising Chelsea or revising some of his own positions. Luckily for Chelsea fans, his whole claim has been quickly undermined by the start of this season.
Chelsea beat the reigning champions of England in October and, on Tuesday, completely wiped the floor with the reigning champions of Spain. They could very feasibly complete the trilogy after Christmas when they travel to Naples in the Champions League.
Was £450m in one window not enough? Not to mention Van Dijk and Salah on huge new deals.

All of this comes amidst a run of truly atrocious form for Liverpool: losing nine of their previous 13 games, with a combined deficit of 1–7 in their last two home matches against Nottingham Forest and PSV. Liverpool’s lavish summer spend has seemingly achieved the opposite of its intended effect. British-record signings Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz have failed to deliver so far.
Fans have been quick to point to Carragher’s previous comments slamming Chelsea’s transfer business — including a long monologue on Monday Night Football in August 2024, claiming that “players need to stop signing for Chelsea.” Over a year later, he is telling Sky Sports that Liverpool actually need to sign more players in January, despite having splashed more than £400m in one window.
We all know that if a similar scenario played out at Stamford Bridge, pundits like Carragher would be saying the complete opposite. Chelsea fans should recognize this engagement bait for what it is, rather than falling for it on a weekly basis — although there is plenty of fun in calling out such brazen hypocrisy when it stares us in the face.
