Cole Palmer has put pen to paper on a new Chelsea contract, extending his stay at Stamford Bridge until 2034.

The forward was already under contract until 2033, but the Blues have moved quickly to tie him down for another year.

For Chelsea supporters, the news is great news. Palmer has become one of the club's most important players since arriving from Manchester City in 2023, and keeping him happy will be a priority as the team looks to compete for the biggest honours.

The 24-year-old has now explained why he was happy to commit his future to the club, with his comments touching on direction, conversations with the people running the team and the side's ambitions.

Here's everything Palmer had to say after signing his new deal.

Cole Palmer explains why he signed a new Chelsea contract

Palmer made it clear that he believes Chelsea are heading in the right direction, with the club's leadership playing a key role in his decision.

"Chelsea means a lot to me and I think the club is going in the right direction, so I'm delighted to sign and I'm obviously very happy," he told Sky Sports.

He went on to explain how conversations with the club's hierarchy helped convince him that extending his stay was the right move.

He continued: "Speaking to the owners, to the sporting directors and obviously the manager, they gave me a lot of confidence so it was only right to sign."

Palmer was already tied to the club for several more years, so this isn't a case of Chelsea scrambling to prevent an immediate departure. Instead, the extension suggests both parties are looking to the future.

Palmer has settled into life at Stamford Bridge since leaving Manchester City, and the club have made no secret of his importance. The forward's new deal proves how keen Xabi Alonso is to keep hold of his best players.

Palmer makes Chelsea trophy ambitions clear

Chelsea have won silverware since Palmer joined, but the England international wants to be part of a side that competes for major trophies consistently.

"Speaking to players as well, everyone has the same ambitions. I feel like we win major trophies here consistently and I want to be a part of that and play a big role in it too," the Englishman added.

Palmer has already lifted the Conference League and Club World Cup with Chelsea, but supporters will know the real test is whether the team can challenge regularly for the Premier League and Champions League.

Chelsea have invested heavily in young talent, and keeping Palmer committed gives them a key figure to build around. A new contract cannot guarantee success, of course, but having one of their best players publicly backing the direction of the club is a positive sign.
