It has been quite some time since Chelsea went out and signed a bona fide superstar in the transfer market. That could change if rumours coming out of Brazil turn out to be accurate. There have been some suggestions that the Blues are interested in signing Rodrygo from Real Madrid, with him having lost his prominence at Santiago Bernabeu since the arrival of Xabi Alonso as their manager, replacing Carlo Ancelotti.
Rodrygo has started just twice in La Liga so far, after the first twelve games, the same number of times he has been left on the bench as an unused substitute. Also, he has not scored or assisted in league competition.
It goes without saying that this is not a great situation for a player who has played a key part in two Champions League-winning campaigns in the past. And with the World Cup coming up, he might be looking for a solution as soon as possible. Could Chelsea turn out to be that?
It does not seem so. While speaking on the situation involving Rodrygo, Real Madrid and Chelsea, Fabrizio Romano said:
"At the moment, what I’m getting as an answer from Chelsea sources is very clear. With maximum respect for Rodrygo, Chelsea are not in negotiations for Rodrygo. Chelsea are not in talks with Rodrygo’s camp or with Real Madrid. And there is zero ongoing between Chelsea and Rodrygo."
Fabrizio Romano drops major Rodrygo to Chelsea news
To be honest, that does not come as a surprise. Chelsea might not have the financial capability to pull off a deal of this magnitude right now.
That is the reason why they had to choose between Alejandro Garnacho and Xavi Simons. And to be fair, after seeing the Dutchman's start at Tottenham Hotspur, they might have made the right choice.
Coming back to the topic of Rodrygo, we are not certain that he would be the solution for Chelsea either. In many ways, he is Willian-esque. There are stretches every season when he looks like a world-class player. But also, he goes through poor spells quite often as well. What the Blues need right now is someone capable of producing throughout the course of a campaign in order to take them to the next level.
