Chelsea have successfully secured a Champions League spot for next season following a 1-0 win against Nottingham Forest at the weekend. The Blues finished fourth, which is their best result in the Premier League in the last three seasons. They might land silverware as well, with a Conference League final against Real Betis coming up.
With the transfer window just around the corner, Chelsea’s next step after that would be to strengthen key positions ahead of next season, especially with Champions League participation in mind. They should be in the market for attacking as well as defensive reinforcements.
While various players are being linked with a move to Chelsea, it looks like the club is exploring the option to bring back a former player to Stamford Bridge. But it could cost them a significant transfer fee to make it happen.
According to reports, Chelsea have an eye on Marc Guehi, who left the club for Crystal Palace for a £18 million transfer fee in 2021. Since then, the English defender has gone on to establish himself as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and has established himself in the England national team as well.
Former Chelsea player could make £70m return this summer
As reported by Football Insider, former Manchester United scout Mick Brown said:
"Marc Guehi could play for any side in the world.
“There used to be questions about whether he was big enough and whether he would be competitive in their, but he’s answered those questions.
“He reads the game fantastically and snuffs moves out, whether it’s on the ground or in the air.
“I’m a big fan of his because he’s answered every question that’s been put to him.
“There’s been a clear improvement and he’s now one of the best in the country, starts for England and has led his team to winning the FA Cup.
“I know Chelsea have been looking at him as one of their top targets at centre-back.
“Obviously, he came through their academy so they know him well.
“He would be a calming and stable influence which they haven’t currently got in their back line.
“So if they get into the Champions League, which is their main focus for now, I expect they’ll step up their efforts to bring him in.
“They’re not the only ones interested, though, so they might have to move quickly."
Well, Champions League qualification has been secured. Chelsea are believed to have been looking to sign a centre-back for quite some time now, and Guehi could be the perfect candidate for the job after they missed out on Dean Huijsen.
Reports suggest that Crystal Palace are seeking a transfer fee of around £70 million. However, they might have to accept a lower figure, as Guehi’s contract is set to expire in the summer of 2026 and a renewal does not appear to be on the cards. Additionally, the fact that Chelsea have secured Champions League qualification strengthens their position in bringing the 24-year-old defender back to Stamford Bridge.
Guehi fits the bill perfectly for Chelsea. Just 24 years old, he is calm, composed and has a certain control in his game. He is also a leader and someone who came through the club's youth ranks.
