Granit Xhaka is still in the World Cup after Switzerland squeezed past Colombia in the Last 16 stage.

The Swiss national team narrowly overcame Colombia on penalties on Tuesday to book their place in the tournament's quarter finals where they will face holders Argentina.

Xhaka was a key figure again, as fans have continually all season at Sunderland. The 33-year-old was the driving force behind the Black Cats' European qualification and that saw Chelsea attempt to sign him.

Xabi Alonso pushed the Blues to reunite him with Xhaka following their successful stint together at Bayer Leverkusen which included winning three major honours, including the 2023-24 Bundesliga title.

However, despite Chelsea making an offer within the region of £8 million, an agreement with Sunderland could not be reached.

Granit Xhaka confirms he's staying at Sunderland

As a result of Chelsea's failed attempt to bring Xhaka to Stamford Bridge, the former Arsenal man has now confirmed he'll be staying at the Stadium of Light next season, and possibly beyond.

Speaking to DAZN (via ESPN) following Switzerland's win over Colombia, Xhaka said: "Sunderland has been my home since day one. We are all very happy.

"I've decided to stay where I am; the most important thing is family. I'm ready to make history with them."

Sunderland's top half finish last season means they'll play UEFA Europa League football next time out, and Xhaka is determined to help them lift what would be their first-ever European trophy.

No hard feelings

Although it seemed at one point like the experience midfielder would welcome a reunion with Alonso, moving to west London is clearly something that will not materialise; certainly not this summer anyway.

Not only that, but with Chelsea failing to qualify for any sort of continental football next season after finishing 10th int he table, it's understandable why Xhaka has decided to stay where he is.

The midfielder isn't getting any younger and the 2026-27 campaign may be his last chance to experience a UEFA competition. Sunderland also has an exciting project unfolding. The north east club are set to make more quality additions this summer as they look to continue to disrupt England's usual top six.

During his first season at Sunderland, Xhaka, who has two years left on his £140,000-per week contract, was directly involved in seven goals in 36 matches in all competitions, including scoring a crucial opener against Everton in November.
