Chelsea are going through a tough period once again. Just when it had looked like things were looking up for the Blues, following a dominant win over Barcelona and a draw against Arsenal despite being down to ten men, Enzo Maresca's side have completely lost their way. They are winless in four games and have lost twice.
Many would put these consistent downturns in form not only on the lack of quality in the squad but also on the lack of experience. Yet, it appears that the Chelsea ownership group is unwilling to change its ways and will continue to recruit unproven youngsters over experienced players.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea’s ownership group BlueCo have won the race to sign 16-year-old midfielder Muhammad Zongo. The Italian journalist has give it the 'here we go'. It is a deal done with Sporting Cascade FC after being scouted at the U17 World Cup. The next step will be at Strasbourg, seen by BlueCo as the perfect setting for his next phase.
Zongo was impressive at the U17 World Cup. In 6 games, he scored 2 goals and provided 3 assists for Burkina Faso at the tournament.
'Here we go' - Chelsea agree deal to sign midfielder
Now, it is safe to say that we do not have a large sample of what Zongo is capable of. But considering how well he did at the U17 World Cup, it is very possible that he might be able to develop into a top midfielder in the future.
The issue is that he won't help Chelsea at the moment. And the Blues need some instant impact players right now.
For far too long, this BlueCo project has been about looking towards the future. At some point, though, it will have to be about winning the biggest prizes here and now. That won't happen if the club constantly keep signing youngsters and use the squad's experience as a built-in excuse for their shortcomings on the pitch.
