Chelsea's problem in the transfer market in recent years has not been a lack of activity. It has been the focus of that said activity. The Blues seem far too focused on finding the next big thing. That has seen them sign one highly-rated youngster after another with the majority of them failing to meet expectations.
Combine that with the fact that they have not gone with proven managers and the Blues are now mediocre at best. Last season, we saw some signs of progress but qualifying for the Champions League and the money coming in from participating at the Club World Cup has not convinced Chelsea to go out and bring in some experience.
They signed Liam Delap before the Club World Cup. That was followed by a move for Jamie Gittens of Borussia Dortmund. And now, the Blues have their third signing.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Joao Pedro to Chelsea is 'here we go'. An agreement is done club to club for a fee in excess of £50m. The Brazilian will travel on Tuesday for medical tests and contract signing, and is ready for the FIFA Club World Cup.
'Here we go' - Fabrizio Romano confirms Chelsea's next summer signing
It is believed that Newcastle United were keen on signing Pedro as well. But Chelsea have won the race for the Brazilian striker.
Their record when it comes to signing players from Brighton & Hove Albion has been decent. Moises Caicedo and Marc Cucurella are two of Chelsea's best right now. And while Robert Sanchez has his fair share of critics, he remains the number one in goal for now.
Of course, the signing of Pedro will divide the fans. There is no doubt that he is a talented player. But is he really an instant upgrade on Nicolas Jackson? Most would have wanted a proven goalscorer like Viktor Gyokeres or Victor Osimhen to arrive. Not another project.
