It might not take long for Xabi Alonso to make his first big Chelsea mistake

Chelsea need to improve several positions this summer. Attack, midfield and defence all need new additions.

BlueCo are facing their biggest transfer window since they took control of the club in 2022.

The American ownership have appointed Xabi Alonso, but they must now bring in the right players, and without Champions League football next season, must do so in a financially responsible way.

A new striker to replace Liam Delap is likely to be needed with a new central midfielder also potentially needed if Enzo Fernandez departs. Then there is Marc Cucurella. The left-back wants out and could return to Barcelona.

And in addition to all this upheaval, signing a new goalkeeper has been rumoured to be on the agenda with AC Milan's Mike Maignan linked for the second time in as many years. Chelsea signing the Frenchman is no where near as close as what it once was, though.

Chelsea have no plans to sign new goalkeeper

Despite Robert Sanchez falling short of expectations ever since he arrived from Brighton and Hove Albion in 2023, according to BBC Sport, the Blues are not intending to sign a replacement this summer.

This is partly due to Mike Penders' emergence as one of Europe's most highly rated keepers. The Belgian spent last season out on loan with Strasbourg but is due to return to Stamford Bridge after the 2026 World Cup.

And with Penders set to stay with the first team, next season will see the 20-year-old go head-to-head with Sanchez for the right to be the number one.

Risky decision

Even though Alonso won't officially take charge until July 1, don't be fooled, the new Chelsea manager would have definitely had a say in this.

Seemingly happy to let his best two keepers vye for the starting spot, the 44-year-old is taking a big risk.

Remember Ole Gunnar Solskjaer doing the same with David De Gea and Dean Henderson at Manchester United? — It didn't work out well for the Red Devils.

Solskjaer ended up not knowing which keeper to play and in what games, and the result was both players became unsettled, and sure enough, neither are still at Old Trafford.

Alonso cannot afford to make the mistake in his first season at Stamford Bridge. The former Bayer Leverkusen boss will need to decide which keeper is his first choice — Premier League-proven Sanchez, or the upcoming Penders.

The Blues need stability, especially at the back, so whichever keeper Alonso ends up putting his full trust in, will need to be up to the task.
