John Obi Mikel believes Chelsea are 'missing' a player they got rid of last summer

After exiting the Champions League and losing their last three league games, Chelsea's season now hinges on the FA Cup.

The Blues have drawn Leeds United in the cup's semi final — a game they'll play later this month — but securing their place in Wembley's final won't be easy.

And they'll come into it off the back of some poor league form. Liam Rosenior's side haven't just lost their last three, they've also failed to score a single goal in all of them.

The side look void of ideas in the attacking third and their lack of firepower is becoming increasingly more obvious.

John Obi Mikel questions Chelsea's decision to get rid of Nicolas Jackson

Although the Blues aren't short of attacking options, they lack a true number nine who's capable of delivering week-in week-out.

Liam Delap has been a total failure following his big money move from Ipswich last summer and Joao Pedro is less a lone forward and more a shadow striker who can nit the play together.

So it's no wonder the goals have dried up, and former player John Obi Mikel, who spoke recently on his YouTube channel, believes his old club should never have let Nicolas Jackson join Bayern Munich.

"We are missing Nicolas Jackson.

What he gave us, no striker has given us. So yes, we are missing Jackson."

Bayern could have signed Jackson permanently for £56 million but his failure to meet the required number of games means the German giants will have to renegotiate his fee should they decide to keep him beyond the end of the season.

Jackson could've improved things but he's still not the answer

Since his £30 million move from Villarreal in 2023, Jackson's record for Chelsea had been fairly decent. The club have definitely seen worse in recent years.

Prior to his loan to Bayern this term, the 24-year-old, who's netted eight times for Bayern while playing second fiddle to Harry Kane, had been directly involved in a goal every other game.

The Senegal international still didn't look like the perfect fit, though. He was missing that cutting edge needed to meet the demands of the Premier League.

While few will doubt he's not an upgrade on Delap, there is still a need for BlueCo to go big on a new number nine sooner rather than later, and the funds recouped from the inevitable sales of Delap and Jackson will certainly help.
