Chelsea has very quickly learned that flooding the box with players and passes can be to the team's benefit. Under Liam Rosenior, they have already won more penalties than they did in more time under Enzo Maresca.
In just nine games (all competitions), Liam Rosenior's Chelsea has won nine penalties. Under Maresca, the Blues won just six in 28 matches across all comps.
Fans loved seeing those two penalties won against Wolves in the opening stages of the weekend. Not only did they help Cole Palmer towards a pretty memorable hat-trick, but they relieved any anxieties Chelsea had going into the tie.
Liam Rosenior has improved what Enzo Maresca was pretty good at himself
The reason why Chelsea has been handed more penalties is not luck. Just watching Chelsea under Liam Rosenior, you can see they are more direct in their approach. They flood the box with bodies, and passes make their way in, too.
When there is more action in the box, the chances of winning penalties are higher. It is not an overly beneficial tactic to rely on penalties, and this isn't the messaging from Liam Rosenior, but it is a nice byproduct of more direct, tight play that Chelsea didn't quite see under Enzo Maresca.
Overall, Chelsea fans are yet to be completely sold on whether it was the right decision to part ways with Enzo Maresca. After the Italian ego-checked the owners, it was a decision waiting to happen, but Liam Rosenior was a controversial replacement choice. That was mainly down to his relative inexperience, at least at Chelsea's level.
So far, though, the former Strasbourg coach has done nothing to delegitimize himself. If anything, more Chelsea fans are on board with the hire now than when it was first announced. He's on the right trajectory, at least.
Look, no Chelsea fan is going to turn their nose up at exciting, attacking football. The more of this that Liam Rosenior provides, the more he will win over even the most stubborn of Chelsea fans.
Like it or lump it, Enzo Maresca is gone for good. It's a new era at Chelsea, and whether or not the reason for this was fair is a conversation that benefits nobody.
To borrow a phrase from Chelsea's Premier League rivals, Rosenior is at the wheel now. We can only hope that the wheel isn't controlled in anywhere near the same manner as Man United's wheel was, but alas!
