Chelsea recently defeated the Champions League holders, Paris Saint-Germain, in the final of the Club World Cup to be crowned the first-ever world champions. That will remain in the history books forever. But there is not much time to dwell and since then, the Blues have brought their focus back to bolstering the squad.
Chelsea still need a reliable centre-back and possibly a new goalkeeper. For the latter position PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donarumma appeared as a potential candidate for the Blues after reports in France that the Italian international could move this summer.
Donnarumma was in goal for all three of Chelsea’s goals in the final, even getting chipped by Joao Pedro. However, one cannot deny the sheer quality the 26-year-old possesses. As a result, there were rumours that the Blues might enter the race to sign him.
That said, a recent update has emerged that says otherwise. According to The Telegraph, Chelsea are not currently among the clubs interested in signing Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain despite reports in France.
Chelsea not in race to sign PSG keeper Gianluigi Donarumma
Initially, Chelsea were actively searching for a new keeper and tried to sign AC Milan’s Mike Maignan before the Club World Cup but failed in their pursuit. It’s still not clear if the Blues will bring someone new between the posts this summer.
Chelsea’s primary keeper Robert Sanchez has proven to be unreliable on more than one occasion. However, he also delivered a strong performance in the final, making crucial saves to help secure a clean sheet. So the club could decide to keep him as their number one for another season.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have recently parted ways with Djordje Petrovic and have also sent Mike Penders out on loan. There are high hopes surrounding the latter, which might prevent the Blues from signing someone like Donnarumma.
