Manchester United are looking to climb up the Premier League table after the worst season in their history. The start has not been particularly promising, with the headline result being a defeat in the League Cup against League Two side Grimsby. They have made quite a few additions in the summer but it looks like plans are already being put in place for the January window with a former Chelsea player on their radar.

Chelsea's revolving door has been continuously moving since the change in ownership, whether it be the players or managers. And there have been some controversial exits along the way.

One of them was the departure of Conor Gallagher last summer, as the Chelsea academy graduate joined Atletico Madrid. In the season before that, he had been regular in the starting XI under the management of Mauricio Pochettino and even captained the side on numerous occasions.

Obviously, there are always concerns when players of that level end up leaving. But Chelsea have been pretty successful in replacing him, with the midfield duo of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez thriving right now. On the other hand, Gallagher has had a much tougher time adjusting to life at Atletico Madrid and is already being linked with a return to England.

As reported by Fichajes, Manchester United already tried to sign Gallagher in the summer transfer window. The deal was initially considered a loan, but talks fell through. Even so, the Old Trafford outfit have not lost sight of the player and will return to the fray in January.

It remains to be seen if Manchester United do end up making a serious push to sign Gallagher in January or not. He has been a fixture in the Atletico Madrid side but not quite a nailed-on starter.

Of course, if Gallagher ends up joining Manchester United, he would not be the first former Chelsea player to do so. Names like Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata and quite a few others belong that list.
