Chelsea is short of a left-back after selling Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid. One potential replacement for him is Álvaro Carreras, who played under Xabi Alonso at Los Blancos.

Overall, Carreras did not have the best of seasons for Real Madrid. This is why Cucurella was brought in to replace him. However, Alonso did trust him, and he performed well under the new Chelsea manager.

Carreras played 90 minutes in five of Alonso's Champions League games in charge of Los Blancos. The only game Carreras missed was when he and many players were rested against Kairat Almaty, which Real Madrid were always going to win convincingly.

The left-back played in 17 La Liga matches under Alonso, scoring once and making one assist. The only league matches he missed when Alonso was in charge were due to suspension. Alonso also played Carreras in two SuperCopa matches and once in the Copa Del Rey.

Carreras was predominantly used as a left-back by Alonso, but was also occasionally used as a center-back. This versatility could be very useful to Chelsea next season. Carreras also has experience playing in England. He came through the ranks at Manchester United, but did not make a first-team appearance. He also had a season on loan at Preston North End in the Championship.

Who else could replace Marc Cucurella at Chelsea?

Jorrel Hato was Cucurella's understudy at Chelsea. He also made 36 appearances for the Blues last season, scoring twice and making one assist. He is only 20, and in the Netherlands' roster for the World Cup.

The Blues also have Caleb Wiley, but he had an abductor injury, which meant he played just five times whilst on loan at Watford last season.

Chelsea have been linked with Andrea Cambiaso of Juventus recently. At 26, he would be a more experienced option for the Blues. Chelsea have been criticized for buying players based on potential recently. This has angered supporters who are used to seeing their club recruit established players.

Signing Cambiaso, who has played over 100 times in Serie A for Juve, would be a shift in the club's recruitment strategy. Overall, it has not worked out for the Blues since BlueCo took over the club.

They have won the Club World Cup and the Europa Conference League. However, the Blues finished 10th last season, meaning they will have no form of European soccer. This will make it difficult for the Blues to sign really world-class players.
