It will be all change in attack for Chelsea this summer and former defender Marcel Desailly believes the perfect striker is staring them in the face.
The Blues are likely to offload Liam Delap following a hugely disappointing first season which saw the 23-year-old score just once in the Premier League. Delap, in addition to Tyrique George, has emerged as a summer transfer target for Everton.
Ahead of the many departures that are expected, Xabi Alonso, who will take charge from July 1, will demand a proven goalscorer, and Desailly thinks his old club should go all out to sign former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez.
Marcel Desailly tells Chelsea to sign Darwin Nunez
Nunez left Anfield a year ago in favour of a lucrative move to Al-Hilal, but still only 26-years-old, could yet play his prime years in Europe, and Desailly feels he's already shown he'd be a perfect fit at Stamford Bridge.
“A player who could suit the profile is former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez,” Desailly told Betway (via Liverpool Echo). “If you give him the confidence and belief, he will not feel shy because the people in the system are a higher grade than him.
“That is what happened to him at Liverpool. There were too many players higher grade than him, so he couldn’t express himself. At Chelsea, I’m sure he would express himself and perform.
“They need a striker but I’m not sure exactly who it will be or where they will get him. Unless they find one in Germany who we don’t know much about yet, but they have to match the profile of what Chelsea is looking for.”
During his first season in the Saudi Pro League, Nunez, who has two years left on his contract at Al-Hilal, scored nine goals and registered five assists in 24 games in all competitions.
Nunez not the only striker linked with moving to Stamford Bridge
Although Nunez could be interested in making a return to the Premier League, he isn't the only striker mentioned as a possible option for the Blues.
Robert Lewandowski is a name that has been floating around ever since he confirmed last season was his last at Barcelona.
The legendary Poland international would not be a long term signing, and he'd definitely cost a lot, despite being a free agent, but he'd certainly come in and do the business for a season.
Alonso's goal in his first season in charge will be to guide Chelsea back into the Champions League, and a player like Lewandowski would help the 44-year-old acheive it.
