As expected, Chelsea are having a busy summer. They have already signed Liam Delap from Ipswich Town and as Nicolas Jackson continues to disappoint, signing another striker is not out of the question. However, some new updates have come out regarding the goalkeeping department, and we may see changes in that field in the coming days.
The Blues were widely linked with AC Milan keeper Mike Maignan prior to the Club World Cup. The Frenchman was also believed to be interested in moving to Stamford Bridge, and it was reported that the two clubs were negotiating a deal. But, a deal could not be agreed before Enzo Maresca's team left for the USA for the Club World Cup.
AC Milan turned down Chelsea's reported proposal for Maignan. The offer was much below what the Italian club thought acceptable, as they wanted at least €20-25 million for the France number one.
Recently, fresh rumours had emerged about Chelsea weighing up a second bid for Maignan. But now, it looks like that might not be the case.
Massive twist in Mike Maignan to Chelsea transfer saga
Kaveh Solhekol of Sky Sports News claims that the Maignan chapter is closed for Chelsea. They will not be signing him this summer. There is only a small chance they will sign another goalkeeper.
In fact, their priority appears to be moving out two of the four goalkeepers currently on their squad. The Blues will reportedly loan one goalkeeper to Strasbourg while looking to transfer another on a permanent basis. Their goalkeeping department currently features Robert Sanchez, Djordje Petrovic, Filip Jorgensen and Mike Penders.
Sanchez has had a shaky time as Chelsea's number one. He made a number of mistakes that led to goals last season. The Blues signed both Jorgensen and Penders last summer, and it is believed that they have great expectations for them.
After being excluded from the Club World Cup despite performing admirably at Strasbourg on loan, Petrovic seems to be the clear choice for a possible transfer. Penders, meanwhile, may be the one to leave on a temporary basis to the French club, where he will continue to grow and get better in preparation for a future move to Chelsea.
