Micah Richards thinks Chelsea have sold a player who 'always delivers'

Chelsea have been one of the busiest clubs during the early stages of the summer transfer window.

The Blues have already let three players go, including Marc Cucurella, who has joined Real Madrid.

The left-back, currently preparing for Spain's upcoming World Cup semi-final against France, became a Los Blancos player last month following a £52 million agreement.

The Spaniard's transfer came as little surprise following the Blues' failure to qualify for European football next season, but some still believe Chelsea have made a big mistake letting him go.

Micah Richards thinks Chelsea will regret selling Marc Cucurella

Despite Cucurella being a divisive player, former Premier League full-back Micah Richards is a big fan of him.

Richards believes the Spaniard is 'the most underrated' left-back in world football and thinks he's the type of player 'who always delivers'.

"Cucurella is probably the most underrated left-back in world football," Richards said on the Rest is Football (via Metro).

"He always delivers. Whether it’s defensively, you always think you’ve got past him and then he gets a leg or a tackle in, he reads it.

"And then going forward, he just gives them a different dimension with [Alex] Baena on that left-hand side. I just think he’s been brilliant.

"There’s all that talk about how he disrespected Chelsea. I didn’t like that, talking about other clubs when [Chelsea are] paying your wages. But he’s at Madrid now, I don’t know if that’s given him a new confidence."

Co-host Alan Shearer added: "Cucurella is one of those players where if he’s on the opposition, you as a fan just don’t like him.

"Just his style and his aggression. But if he’s on your team, you would love him!"

The 27-year-old played 163 times during his three years at Stamford Bridge, scoring nine goals and registering 13 assists.

The harsh reality of no longer being among Europe's elites

Everybody knows the impact Chelsea's failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League would have. Being honest, it was amazing Xabi Alonso agreed to become the manager.

But seeing Cucurella move on was far from surprising. We're not just talking about a top level Spain international here, we're talking about a defending European Champion.

The former Brighton man is clearly worthy of elite-level domestic football, and sadly, Chelsea just cannot offer that.

The same can be said for Enzo Fernandez.

The Argentine lifted the 2022 World Cup with Argentina and is just two games away from doing it again at this summer's tournament. Although it's frustrating that he wants to move on, it's understandable why he does.

If Chelsea are to stop the rot and become an attractive option for players again, Aonso absolutley must get them back onto Europe's biggest stage.
