When Chelsea signed Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in the summer for £117 million, that made him the most expensive Englishman of all time, and with that came a lot of pressure, but the 24-year-old has started his Chelsea career off well, bagging three goals and four assists in all competitions for the Blues.
Rogers was called up for the most recent England squad by Thomas Tuchel, although he didn't start the game against Spain at Wembley, only playing 20 minutes off the bench, but since then he's played 200 minutes across the next three games, getting a goal and an assist against Croatia and Czechia.
Rogers got the start against Czechia in Prague, but didn't make the best impression, failing to create a chance, as well as only winning one of his seven ground duels, and although he hit the crossbar, it was an underwhelming outing for the Chelsea man.
This meant Rogers was named on the bench for the Croatia game, whether that was due to Tuchel rotating his side midway through a longer-than-usual international break or simply managing his minutes. However, when his opportunity came to show why he should start, he took it. Rogers scored a superbly composed goal, delicately chipping the goalkeeper, and could even have added an assist after creating two chances, including a big opportunity, during England’s demolition of Croatia.
Rogers’ performance against Czechia at Wembley was arguably his best of the international break, as he provided the assist for Harry Kane’s first goal at the end of a flowing team move. Played in behind by a smart pass from Elliot Anderson, Rogers showed great composure to fire a first-time pass on the bounce across the box, allowing Kane to make it 2-0 to England.
Alongside his assist, Rogers created the joint most chances in the game with four, completing two of his three dribbles, as well as five of his eight ground duels.
With Rogers playing another 90 minutes, this is sure to put him in good stead for when he returns to Chelsea for their first game back against Bournemouth on October 10. With Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro possibly missing the game through injury, that will mean that Rogers might have to step up more for Xabi Alonso's side and be the one creating chances.
