Chelsea have wasted little time searching for a replacement for the outgoing Enzo Fernandez, with the club making a late move for one of their transfer targets after the Argentinian’s move to Manchester City was completed.
Despite the early deadline seemingly ruling out a deal, Enzo has completed his switch to City in a move that matches the British transfer record and sets a new benchmark for the player.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have been forced to act quickly and have identified Lamine Camara as their preferred replacement. The Senegal international is reportedly available for a fee in the region of €55 million and could now be brought in to fill the void left by Enzo in midfield.
Camara’s arrival would give Chelsea another dynamic option in the centre of the pitch, with the 22-year-old potentially slotting into Xabi Alonso’s 3-4-2-1 system.
The Senegal star could form a midfield partnership with either Reece James or Moises Caicedo, depending on how Alonso chooses to balance his side. While replacing Enzo would be no easy task, Chelsea appear determined to move quickly and ensure his departure does not leave a significant hole in their squad.
Who is Lamine Camara?
The Senegalese midfielder began his career in his homeland before making the move to Ligue 2 side Metz in February 2023. His performances quickly earned widespread praise, while helping the club secure promotion and putting him firmly on the radar of bigger European clubs. That form eventually earned him a move to the principality with AS Monaco.
A dynamic box-to-box midfielder, Camara has made 75 appearances for Monaco, scoring seven goals along the way. His energy and ability to break defensive lines with incisive passing are among his biggest strengths. The midfielder has also spoken about his admiration for players such as Kevin De Bruyne and Toni Kroos, and elements of their influence can be seen in his style of play.
At just 22, Camara still has plenty of room to develop, making the potential upside of the deal particularly significant. Chelsea supporters may need to be patient as he adapts to the demands of Premier League football and competes for regular minutes.
Caicedo and James remain ahead of him in the pecking order, leaving Camara to compete with Romeo Lavia and Jordan Henderson for opportunities in midfield.
If Chelsea secure his signature for roughly a third of what they received for Enzo, it could prove to be an impressive piece of business for the BlueCo ownership group, both financially and on the pitch.
