Chelsea will be hoping to repeat their heroics from over a decade ago, when they defeated Bayern Munich in their own backyard in the Champions League. That time around, it was in the final, as the Blues won the trophy for the first time. On this occasion, it will be their first game of the European season, as they return to the competition after a two-year absence.

Chelsea have their fair share of problems at the moment though. Injuries have been a major concern for Enzo Maresca's side at the start of the campaign and might have already derailed their title hopes.

The latest in that quickly growing list is the name of Dario Essugo. He was injured while away on international duty and has had to undergo surgery. The expectation is that he won't play again this year.

Earlier in the day, speculation had emerged that he was being removed from the Champions League squad and now, that has been officially confirmed. Chelsea have announced on their website that Facundo Buonanotte has been added to the squad, in place of Essugo, who underwent surgery on a thigh injury.

Buonanotte was signed late in the summer transfer window in Chelsea's most confusing move this summer. He was brought in on a straight loan deal from Brighton & Hove Albion, without any option or obligation to sign him in the future.

Merely days after his arrival, Buonanotte was also left out of Chelsea's Champions League squad. That raised a lot of eyebrows about the move and why it had even been made.

One or another, Buonanotte now finds himself as part of the Champions League squad though. It will be interesting to see if he can make his presence felt at the European level. He had a decent debut performance against Brentford and could be a solid backup option to Cole Palmer.
