Levi Colwill's ACL injury has had a major impact on Chelsea, perhaps even greater than most had expected. It was very clear that Enzo Maresca wanted another centre-back to be signed once it became clear that the Englishman was set for a long spell on the sidelines. But the Blues decided to stick with the options they had, which appears to have been a mistake.
Chelsea simply do not have a standout centre-back right now. As a result, it is no surprise that the defence seems to crumble whenever the pressure is on.
One of the reasons that the media gave for Chelsea not signing a centre-back in the summer was that they did not want to stall the development of Josh Acheampong. But unfortunately, it does not look like Maresca trusts him fully yet.
Acheampong has put in solid performances when given a chance. But they have only come when other options are not available or need a rest. He played a key part in the wins over Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, but after Chelsea lost to Sunderland, he has been left on the bench as an unused substitute in the two Premier League games that have followed.
Serie A club considering January move for elite Chelsea talent
Those with a keen memory will remember the contract standoff between Chelsea and Acheampong not too long ago. And if he continues to struggle for minutes, it would not come as a surprise if the defender starts to push for an exit. Other clubs are already keeping an eye out as well.
As reported by TUTTOmercatoWEB, Fiorentina is already gearing up for the January transfer window and one of the club's top priorities is finding a new defender, specifically a centre-back. They are considering a January move for Acheampong.
Of course, it would be a mistake if Chelsea part ways with Acheampong. He is one of the few players they have who seems to possess world-class potential if his development goes right.
Unfortunately, it has felt like he has been overlooked at times. So, it would be understandable if he tries to engineer a move away from the club.
