Thomas Tuchel has made it clear that Cole Palmer’s fitness problems, rather than his ability, are the reason he has fallen behind with England.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Nations League opener against Spain, the England manager explained that Palmer has missed too many camps through injury. However talented a player may be, Tuchel stressed, there is a level of trust and understanding that can only be built by consistently being present with the squad and working together on the training pitch.

"For sure, it’s another missed opportunity. He misses too many opportunities and I don’t blame him for it, it is just a fact"

It's a pointed message, but not an unfair one. Tuchel has previously claimed that he likes his International squads to be run on continuity, tactical understanding, relationships with teammates, a manager's confidence in deploying a player in specific moments. None of that can be built from a treatment table or from a withdrawal.

Palmer has shown at Chelsea exactly what he's capable of when fit and earned him a spot in the squad, but repeated fitness setbacks have denied Tuchel the chance to build that same trust at international level.

"But he misses way too many camps with injuries and I only want to rely on what I personally witness within my team and for that you have to be in camp. If not, there is a next level you cannot achieve, you can only do it if you are with us on the pitch"

For Chelsea, this should land as more than an England story. If Tuchel is voicing his frustration publicly over how often Palmer is unavailable, it is a sign of just how disruptive his injury problems have become, and a reminder that Chelsea’s own campaign has suffered when his fitness has had to be managed reactively rather than proactively.

The bigger lesson is that Chelsea cannot afford to build their future around one player. With the likes of Estevão and Geovany Quenda waiting in the wings, there is a case for giving them more opportunities to shoulder some of the creative burden rather than continuing to rely so heavily on Palmer.

Palmer remains one of the most gifted players English football has produced in years. But talent alone is not enough if he cannot stay on the pitch long enough to show it, whether for his country or for the club that needs him most.
