The Premier League has been halted for the final international break of the season, and Cole Palmer has been one of several Chelsea's stars called up to represent his country.

Palmer has been included in Thomas Tuchel's latest England squad for the country's upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.

The 23-year-old appears to have been handed a slightly different role for the Three Lions to the one he plays at Chelsea under head coach Liam Rosenior.

Thomas Tuchel gives Cole Palmer different position in England training

Rosenior prefers to play Enzo Fernandez as Chelsea's number 10 and that tactical decision nearly always sees Palmer deployed on the right flank.

Although not an outright winger, the former Manchester City academy star is best known for playing a mezzala-style role for the Blues; a position that allows him to drift into the half spaces out wide.

Tuchel seems to have other ideas, though. According to the Daily Mail, who watched the Three Lions' most recent training session, Palmer was just one of two players handed a 'free role'.

Granted more creative license, Palmer, along with Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham, were allowed a lot more freedom in central roles, suggesting Tuchel views the pair as more natural number 10's.

The Daily Mail also noted that Palmer's position in the middle could have given Tuchel and his coaching staff the opportunity to assess the Chelsea midfielder's ability to scan his surroundings before receiving the ball.

Palmer's performances for England could force Liam Rosenior into major decision

Although it remains to be seen which midfield Tuchel will go for in England's two upcoming friendlies, Palmer, who is closing in on his 13th senior cap, is certain to get some minutes under his belt.

And should the 23-year-old perform to a high level and help unlock Uruguay's notoriously hard-to-break-down defence, Rosenior will be given food for thought ahead of what is a brutal run of fixtures for Chelsea.

The Blues will welcome both Manchester clubs to Stamford Bridge before travelling to take on Brighton and Hove Albion, and currently six points off fourth with just seven games to go, there is virtually no more room for error.

Chelsea must view every game, including their FA Cup quarter final against Port Vale, as the most important of the campaign, and having Palmer pulling the strings, particularly in a position Fernandez has failed to thrive in, could prove to be the difference.
