"Of course..." - Thomas Tuchel gives Reece James injury update ahead of World Cup knockouts

England are through to the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup.

Despite not being at their best, the Three Lions finished top of Group L after beating Croatia and Panama as well as securing a draw against Ghana. Their campaign so far has seen them concede just two goals, but the real test begins soon.

England will face DR Congo in Atlanta on Wednesday in the Last 32 stage with the game's winner going onto play either Mexico or Ecuador in Mexico City in the next round.

England fighting right-back injury crisis

Tuchel has been given a lot to juggle in preparation for the tournament's knockout stages, though. The former Chelsea manager has had brutal luck with injuries to nearly all of his right-backs, including Reece James.

The German shocked the nation after his 26-man squad announcement saw him snub Real Madrid's Trent Alexander-Arnold in favour of James and Newcastle United's Tino Livramento.

And that has turned out to be a bad decision, not because James and Livramento aren't two of the country's best right-backs, but because they're both exceptionally injury-prone, and that has since been proven.

Livramento suffered an injury just 24 hours before the tournament kicked off and was replaced by Trevoh Chalobah. And James, who played the full 90 minutes against Croatia and Ghana, has also picked up an injury.

The Chelsea skipper injured his hamstring which ruled him out of last weekend's game against Panama and has cast doubt on his chances of playing against DR Congo later this week.

And if things couldn't get any worse for Tuchel, the Chelsea defender's replacement, Jarell Quansah, also got injured. The Bayer Leverkusen star damaged his ankle against Panama and was replaced after Djed Spence after 63 minutes.

Thomas Tuchel explains Jarell Quansah and Reece James' chances of playing against DR Congo

Now with just 48 hours before the Three Lions kick off against DR Congo, Tuchel has revealed Quansah and James' chances of being involved.

Speaking to BBC Sport about Jarell Quansah and Reece James, the 52-year-old said: "A classic ankle twist and he [Quansah] is in pain. He said he had it before and it is a matter of days. He has his leg up high and in ice.

"Naturally, of course [I am worried about the right-back situation] - we have another injury in the position.

"It will be a tight race for Reece James and a tight race for Jarell Quansah, but it is our job to find solutions and we will do."

Failure to be able to call upon either, or both, Quansah and James will likely force Tuchel into starting Spence at right-back.
