Chelsea's search for Liam Rosenior's successor rumbles on, and whoever replaces him could target Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon.
Rosenior was relieved of his duties as Chelsea manager after just 104 days in charge, following an embarrassing 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion.
It was the first time the Blues had lost five consecutive games without scoring since 1912, and now Chelsea have drafted up a three-man shortlist to succeed the 41-year-old.
Xabi Alonso, Marco Silva and Andoni Iraola are the three main contenders to take over at Stamford Bridge, though whoever BlueCo choose as their fifth permanent appointment will have several decisions to make this summer.
Latest on Anthony Gordon to Chelsea
Chelsea have identified multiple weak points in their squad after struggling to challenge for the top four, and one of those positions is left wing.
Alejandro Garnacho has flopped since joining from Manchester United in the summer, while Jamie Gittens has suffered his fair share of injury troubles.
That explains why Chelsea are plotting a move for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, and according to The Athletic, failing to qualify for the Champions League won't impact their pursuit of the 25-year-old.
The Blues are joined in their admiration for the Englishman by European giants Bayern Munich, while Arsenal and Liverpool could revive their interest in his signature.
It is claimed that Newcastle want at least £80 million for Gordon this summer, and although that is arguably a fair valuation in this current market, rival interest and a huge price tag could make a move tricky.
Nonetheless, if Chelsea can prise the England international to West London, he is undoubtedly an upgrade on Garnacho and Gittens down the left flank.
What Thomas Tuchel has said about Gordon
Similar to what Manchester United did last summer when they captured Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha from Brentford and Wolves, respectively, Chelsea are also looking to add Premier League-proven players to their squad.
Gordon, who has made 176 appearances in England's top-flight for Everton and Newcastle, would tick the above box, and that is even before mentioning his incredible attributes.
Chelsea aren't blessed with a plethora of wingers who can take on their man, utilising pace and power in one-versus-one situations.
But Gordon is arguably one of the most direct wide men in the Premier League, and former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel thinks he's "so good" at committing defenders at pace.
"I think Anthony deserved to stay in the team. He is a direct player, I think this is his biggest strength, to go direct and go again and again.
To have this repetition in his intensity. He just collects high intensity runs, he collects metres in sprints and this is so, so good.
It’s important that he knows his strengths and plays exactly into his strengths. Now we play a high-press and he’s important against the ball. He was clinical today with the first goal that calmed our nerves and set the tone and set the game in the right direction."
Tuchel said that about the Newcastle speedster in October 2025 after watching him open the scoring in England's 5-0 demolition of Latvia.
The Blues have also been on the receiving end of Gordon's brilliance already this season, conceding against him in a 1-0 defeat against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge. And that moment arguably gave Chelsea more motivation to sign him.
