Anything can happen in football. Manchester United's loss at the hands of Grimsby Town is proof of that. And off the pitch, Tottenham Hotspur could be the ones to spring a surprise at the expense of Chelsea. A deal that the Blues have been working on for weeks could be derailed by their London rivals.

Tottenham Hotspur have made a fantastic start to their season after a change of manager and a strong summer transfer window. They are not satisfied yet though, and seem to have set their sights on one of Chelsea's primary targets.

As reported by The Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur are holding talks over a bid for Xavi Simons. The Dutch international has been on Chelsea’s radar for some time, with the Blues wanting to part with Nicolas Jackson or Christopher Nkunku, before pressing ahead with a move of their own. They have also been evaluating a move for Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez.

That may open a window of opportunity for Tottenham Hotspur. They have been interested in the Dutchman for some time as well and there is optimism that he would be open to a move to Spurs, despite his apparent interest in joining Chelsea.

Of course, this entire situation depends on Chelsea. The recent rumours about a move for Lopez have certainly been interesting, and surprising, considering how long they have been working on a deal to sign Simons.

Is this a sign that Chelsea have given up on the idea of signing Simons and have turned their attention elsewhere? Or is it a tactical briefing to try and accelerate the move for the Dutchman?

Whatever maybe the case, this Simons transfer saga has suddenly gotten a lot more interesting. Even a few days earlier, it had looked like the move to Chelsea was as good as a done deal and it was only a matter of time before it happened. But now, it appears that there is a genuine chance that the Dutchman could end up elsewhere.thep
