Chelsea are hoping the appointment of Xabi Alonso proves to be the driving force behind a much-needed revival following a disastrous season under Liam Rosenior which ended without European football.
The size of the rebuild facing Alonso is obvious. Several players are expected to leave, including Filip Jorgensen, with numerous arrivals moving the other way.
There is a growing feeling the Blues must move away from hoarding talented youngsters and instead start building a squad capable of competing for the biggest honours immediately.
And to Chelsea's advantage, they now have a manager who has one of the biggest reputations in European football.
Alonso is widely regarded as one of football's brightest coaches after his success at Bayer Leverkusen, and his reputation alone could play an important part in Chelsea's recruitment power.
Comments made by Real Madrid's Arda Guler recently highlight just how highly Chelsea's new boss is regarded.
Arda Guler has special relationship with Xabi Alonso
Guler enjoyed a great spell under Alonso. Working under the Spaniard saw Guler produce some of his best numbers in a Los Blancos shirt including four goals and 10 assists in just 34 matches.
The 21-year-old, who spoke to TRT Spor, and has now spoken openly about the bond the pair developed during their time together.
"The truth is that we had a brilliant relationship. I felt as though he'd handed me the keys. It was exactly what I was looking for, honestly," he said.
"Now he's signed for Chelsea. I hope everything goes well for him. Of course, we're still messaging each other."
Guler's admiration for Alonso has been obvious for quite some time but these latest comments suggestion he'd love a reunion.
Future approach may depend on Cole Palmer
The Turkey international is exactly the sort of player many supporters would love to see wearing blue, but any realistic move would probably depend on what happens with Cole Palmer.
Both players thrive in similar attacking areas, both are among the most highly-rated young playmakers in Europe and both are valued in the region of £90 million.
For that reason alone, it's difficult to imagine Chelsea seriously pursuing Guler while Palmer remains a key part of the squad.
Despite a disappointing season by his own standards, Palmer is still viewed as one of the key components in Chelsea's long-term project and Alonso's immediate focus is likely to be unlocking his best form rather than finding an alternative.
