Since the change in ownership, Chelsea have been very active when it comes to signing the best players from around the globe. We have already seen Estevao make his presence felt at Stamford Bridge. But this might just be the beginning of the club's long-term plans, with a number of other wonderkids waiting in the wings.
Quite a few of them have not even arrived at Chelsea yet. Geovany Quenda of Sporting CP is on that list.
Manchester United had looked like the favourites to sign Quenda before Chelsea swooped in and got a deal done. He is still at Sporting CP but will join the Blues next summer.
Unfortunately, the youngster has picked up an injury that will keep him out for a while. As reported by Record Portugal, Quenda may have suffered a fracture in his right foot in Friday's derby against Benfica. He will likely be unavailable for selection for the next 2 months.
World-class Chelsea wonderkid suffers serious injury
The injury comes at a terrible time for Quenda. He had taken a step forward in his development this season and had become a lot more clinical in terms of contributing with goals and assists.
He has scored 5 goals and provided 8 assists in 1273 minutes of football so far this season. It is impressive to see this kind of output from someone who is still just 18 years of age. For many youngsters, this is the toughest step to take and Quenda has done it quite early in his career.
The talent and quality are quite clearly there when it comes to Quenda. That being said, it is equally important that he remains fit. We have seen many promising careers be derailed by injuries in the past. Hopefully, this is not another such example.
