Chelsea and Manchester United have been on a similar pathway this season. They started off terribly but have found a few wins in recent weeks to get things back on track. It is very clear though that both of them need to improve their squad if they want to be competing for the Premier League crown anytime soon.
One of the positions where both of them could do with another option is goalkeeper. For Chelsea, Robert Sanchez has been pretty good if you discount his flop against Manchester United, when he was sent off early on, ending Enzo Maresca's side's hopes of winning then and there. On the other hand, Filip Jorgensen does not seem good enough to be the regular starter, which was evident in his nervy performance against third division side Lincoln City in the League Cup.
Manchester United's goalkeeping issues are not a secret either. They could do with another option between the posts, just like Chelsea.
Interestingly, it looks like both have been handed the chance to sign a Barcelona goalkeeper in January. But would it be the right move at this point in time?
World-class player offered to Chelsea and Man Utd for January
As reported by TBR Football, Marc-Andre ter Stegen has been offered to a number of Premier League clubs. This includes Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and West Ham United. They have been approached to inform them that the German goalkeeper is available and could move on loan.
Five or six years ago, a move for someone like Ter Stegen would have been a no-brainer. He was one of the best goalkeepers in the world, if not the very best.
But right now, there are serious doubts around him. He is 33 years of age and has dealt with quite a few injury problems recently. In fact, he is out with one at the moment and is expected to return in December.
But it is pretty clear that Barcelona have moved on and no longer see a place for him at the club. As a result, it is time for Ter Stegen to find a new home for himself. A permanent deal might be difficult to attract at this point, which is why the Catalan giants might be looking for a loan deal, which could help him depart permanently in the future if things work out according to plan.
