BlueCo have persuaded Xabi Alonso to join Chelsea, with the 44-year-old signing a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

The news was broken by The Athletic's David Ornstein on Saturday evening that Alonso has agreed to join the Blues after visiting London earlier this week.

Ever since Liam Rosenior was sacked in April, Alonso was always Chelsea's primary target, but the former Real Madrid boss needed assurances over how much control he was going to have behind-the-scenes.

Enzo Maresca previously complained that he had little control over the club's recruitment strategy, and that is a mistake BlueCo have since promised to learn from, having lured the best manager on the market to West London.

Chelsea need to sign quality defenders

Chelsea intended to hire a manager before the World Cup, and supporters will be delighted that Alonso is leading them into a hopefully prosperous new era.

The Spaniard has league-winning experience at Bayer Leverkusen after achieving an invincible campaign in 2023/24, and will have similar ambitions at Stamford Bridge.

The aim will be to push Chelsea closer to the Premier League's pacesetters, Arsenal and Manchester City, ahead of next season, and he can do so by helping carry out a flawless strategy, starting with defensive investment.

Alonso needs to sign a centre-back with incredible leadership qualities to play in a back three with Levi Colwill and perhaps Trevoh Chalobah, depending on who he believes is good enough to stay this summer.

Chelsea have the youngest squad in the Premier League, with an average age of 23.5, and that has been telling throughout this campaign. The Blues have lacked defensive control and leadership, arguably two attributes that disappeared once Thiago Silva departed in 2024.

Nottingham Forest's Murillo has been linked to Chelsea in the past, and he's arguably someone who could fix their problems at the back.

Chelsea should thrive in Alonso's system

A defensive stalwart to start in the middle of Alonso's back three can be crucial to his system working, with the Spaniard already boasting the ideal wing-backs at his disposal.

Reece James and Marc Cucurella, arguably the two best attacking full-backs in the division, can thrive in a system that gives wing-backs more freedom.

Moving into the midfield, and Moises Caicedo's partnership with Enzo Fernandez can continue in a system that will provide more runners from the flank and extra defensive cover.

Cole Palmer, meanwhile, should be the star man once more in the pockets of space in the right channel after struggling this season, while Joao Pedro can continue where he left off this season as a central striker.
