Chelsea ready to take a loss of over £50 million on Thomas Tuchel signing
Chelsea signed Romelu Lukaku in the summer of 2021 in a bid to provide Thomas Tuchel with the necessary firepower in the attack. The burly Belgian had a stellar time at Inter Milan and was expected to replicate the same at Stamford Bridge, however, it was a colossal failure.
In his two seasons with Inter, Lukaku scored 64 goals in 98 appearances, emerging as the top scorer for the club for two consecutive years. When he came to Chelsea for a second spell, expectations were high for Lukaku but the player failed to settle in Tuchel’s system. In 44 appearances for the Blues during the 2021-22 season, the Belgian netted just 15 goals.
With Tuchel not able to incorporate Lukaku into the system, he was loaned out to Inter last summer. The deal was a simple loan but there was hope that the Nerrazzuri would sign Lukaku at the end of the season if the striker is able to score goals in a wholesale fashion.
Chelsea willing to sell Romelu Lukaku for a huge loss
The 29 year old striker has struggled to get going in Serie A, as injuries continuously troubled Lukaku. The former Manchester United man has played just 19 games this season and netted five goals in all competitions.
Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta has already decided Lukaku’s fate. The Serie A giants will not be signing the Belgian as he has failed to meet the desired targets and he will return to Chelsea at the end of his loan spell.
On the other hand, the Blues are already planning for their future project without Lukaku. Chelsea want to sign a lethal striker and the names of Victor Osimhen and Dusan Vlhaovic have been floated. One thing that is clear is that Lukaku doesn’t feature in Chelsea’s plans and Graham Potter would be open to selling the 29 year old.
According to Football Insider, CFC are prepared to incur a humungous loss on Lukaku. The Belgium international has been loosely linked with a move to Saudi Arabia as well as Premier League sides Aston Villa and Everton. Though there has not been any concrete reports, his exit is mooted this summer.
CFC are prepared to accept a cut price of less than £30 million in order to offload Lukaku, incurring a loss of over £65 million, after signing him two years back for a record fee of £7.5 million. One of the main reasons why Chelsea are willing to take a huge hit on Lukaku is to offload his mammoth wages.
The forward earns around £325,000 per week and Chelsea are aiming to trim their wage bill before the start of next season. His departure will not only reduce the wage bill but also reduce the already huge squad size.
