Chelsea attacker on verge of joining Everton and why it would be a great deal

Tyrique George is closing in on a permanent move away from Chelsea.

After struggling for regular minutes at Stamford Bridge under past managers, the 20-year-old was forced to spend last season on loan with Everton.

Although limited to mostly cameo appearances from the bench, David Moyes remained committed to the winger and hinted earlier this year that he'd like to continue working with him.

Chelsea in talks with Everton to sell Tyrique George

George has always been well thought of at Chelsea. He is a product of the Cobham youth academy, but his pathway to first team football has always been blocked by others playing in the same position.

The signing of Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United last summer saw George fall even further down the pecking order.

As a result, and with just 12 months left on his contract, this summer will likely see the Blues offload him while they still have the chance to.

According to the NY Times, Everton are in pole position to sign the young English winger and remain locked in talks over the structure of the deal.

Part of the Toffees' loan agreement included a £25 million buy option — a clause they failed to activate — but current negotiations are "progressing well" over a lesser upfront fee and add ons which could take the deal close to the original asking price.

Should Chelsea agree to Everton's latest proposal, George would become Moyes' first signing of the summer with fellow loanee Jack Grealish also in line to be signed permanently.

Great move for George

No one likes seeing one of their own move on, especially to a league rival, but in George's case, it's hard to argue this wouldn't be a great solution.

He isn't going to get anywhere near Xabi Alonso's first team on a regular basis, he's out of contract next year and his sale would represent pure profit on the books.

A club like Everton would provide the 20-year-old with a lot more opportunities to continue his development as he looks to fulfil genuine potential as one of the country's best young wide forwards.

He has already shown glimpses of what he can do. On the rare occasions George has featured for Chelsea, he has averaged a direct goal contribution every three games.

As such, since the youngster was promoted to the Blues' first team at the end of 2024, he has scored six goals and registered another six assists in 36 matches in all competitions.
