With the arrival of striker Liam Delap this summer, Chelsea have taken a step toward becoming more competitive among other Premier League heavyweights. After bringing in their new goalscorer, Enzo Maresca now seems to be looking forward to bolstering their goalkeeping ranks and might be trying to sign the world's best in that position.

Chelsea had previously tried to acquire a new goalkeeper this summer, but their bid to bring in Mike Maignan before the Club World Cup failed. The French stopper was also interested in moving to Stamford Bridge, but it was recently reported that the chapter is closed for the Blues.

Now, it looks like Chelsea are looking elsewhere. Their new target in goal might be Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez.

As reported by Metro, Argentine journalist Christian Martin told DSports:

"Chelsea wants Emiliano Martínez as their starting GK, and Enzo Maresca has asked.

‘Willy Caballero, who is part of the technical team, has also given the go-ahead.

‘The player wants to stay in England, so for now it’s an option for Chelsea."

The Argentine has excelled at Villa Park after joining them from Arsenal in 2020. But his emotional reaction after last season's final home game, and the club's PSR difficulties, have raised rumours that Martinez could be on his way out this summer.

However, signing Martinez won't be that simple for the Blues, though, because they're not the only team interested. He has already been linked with Manchester United, and Aston Villa may let the reigning The Best FIFA Goalkeeper holder leave for a transfer fee in the region of £40 million.

Robert Sanchez has struggled as Chelsea's number one, yet he remains in his position ahead of Filip Jorgensen. Djordje Petrovic is also expected to leave the club despite performing admirably at Strasbourg on loan last season and winning their Player of the Year award.

As a result, Chelsea require an instant solution to their goalkeeping challenges, and Martinez would be an excellent signing for them, with his experience and mentality at the back being a significant asset.
