We ask if the alleviation of the apparent pressure to challenge Liverpool for the Premier League title is a blessing in disguise for Chelsea Football Club? And does a recent unwanted development increase the Blues' chances for a successful season?

Chlesea vs Fulham not as it seemed

Chelsea lost at home to west London rivals Fulham on Boxing Day. While the result was a surprise, the Blues have been exceeding their own slightly downbeat expectations so far this season. The combination of great results and a fine squad labelled CFC as challengers for the Premier League title.

Whether he is right or wrong, or you agree or disagree, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca attempted to put distance between his team and the chance of winning the extremely difficult-to-navigate division. Personally, I would say that Maresca was merely being coy and managing the renewal of optimism. I'm sure the Italian's ploy was to avoid or evade complacency creeping into his developing side.

Maresca is a very clever and qualified gaffer. Therefore the Blues naturally have the right man for the job. Yet CFC should be aiming as high as possible. Champions League reentry is likely the main aspiration in reality. Though cup triumphs and a high league placement would accelerate this gentle but substantial progress achieved by Maresca.

Chelsea conclusion

However, the former Leicester City and Manchester City coach might be selling his current club short. Instead of managing expectations, Maresca's concentration should probably be on game management judging by the relative smash and grab executed by the Cottagers.

Although, now that Chels have been defeated in a winnable match against an underrated yet beatable foe, the duress from possible pressure on the Blues alleviates. The assumption or projection of giving leaders Liverpool a challenge atop the EPL is no longer the prime football media story. The weight of burden evaporates and steady but real progression can continue. Overachievement becomes plausible once again.
